The White House summit on August 18, 2025, marked a significant milestone in the ongoing diplomatic efforts to secure peace in Ukraine. The summit, which was attended by U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian leaders, was assessed as significant by German advisor Friedrich Merz.

Merz, a key figure in European politics, considered the days leading up to the summit as crucial for Ukraine and Europe. He emphasised that such a summit would not have been possible without the ceasefire, which paved the way for meaningful discussions.

The summit was deemed successful by Merz due to the ceasefire, which allowed for intensive discussions on security guarantees for Ukraine. The discussions resulted in a commitment from the U.S. to provide significant military support and protection for Ukraine after the war. Trump promised "very good protection, very good security," although the full extent of U.S. assistance remains unspecified.

Ukraine agreed to buy $100 billion worth of American weapons, financed by Europe, as part of a deal linked to U.S. security guarantees contingent on a peace agreement. Additionally, a $50 billion joint deal was made to produce drones with Ukrainian companies. Reports also indicated that Trump planned to provide air support and intelligence to Kyiv as part of these guarantees.

Merz welcomed President Trump's offer to provide security guarantees for Ukraine, and noted that the dialogue with the U.S. President was frank and open. He highlighted the importance of Ukraine's presence in any negotiations, stating that real negotiations can only take place in a summit that Ukraine also attends.

However, Merz also pointed out that all of Europe must be involved in the security guarantees for Ukraine. He stated that the question of who will participate in these security guarantees and the extent of their involvement needs to be discussed between European partners and the U.S. government.

Overall, Merz expressed a positive assessment of the Ukraine summit at the White House, stating that it exceeded his expectations. The summit was part of broader diplomatic efforts involving NATO, European leaders, and negotiations between Zelensky and Putin, with Trump positioning himself as a necessary party to finalize a peace deal.
