Ukraine possesses the right to determine its own destiny, asserted Estonia's Prime Minister.
Coalition of the Willing Reaffirms Commitment to Ukraine's Sovereignty and Peace
The Coalition of the Willing, a collective including Estonia, Ukraine, and the United States, has reiterated its unwavering support for Ukraine's sovereignty, territorial integrity, and security arrangements. This stance comes in the face of ongoing tensions with Russia.
During a recent video meeting, the leaders present agreed that international borders must not be changed by force and that Ukraine’s security guarantees must be robust, credible, and practical. The coalition unequivocally rejects any Russian veto over Ukraine’s path to NATO and the EU, and is prepared to offer security guarantees similar to Article 5 of NATO once hostilities cease.
Key points from the meeting include the importance of meaningful negotiations with Russia on peace, only possible under conditions of a ceasefire or significant reduction in hostilities. If Russia refuses to agree to a ceasefire, stronger sanctions and economic pressure are deemed necessary. Ukraine must play a central role in negotiations regarding its future and security, with no limitations on its armed forces or cooperation with other countries to defend itself.
The U.S. and European partners are ready to contribute to security guarantees, with plans for reassurance forces potentially deployed after hostilities stop. The coalition supports a just and lasting peace that protects Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal, among the attendees, emphasised that substantive negotiations can only take place under conditions of a ceasefire, but Russia has not changed its goals and continues to kill. The U.S. was represented by Vice President J.D. Vance and Special Envoy for Ukraine and Russia Keith Kellogg.
Following the video call, Prime Minister Michal confirmed that the atmosphere of the meeting was good and that the countries had similar understandings of the next steps. A just and lasting peace can only be achieved by respecting international law.
In conclusion, the coalition affirms that peace and security in Ukraine must respect its sovereignty fully and that Russia cannot dictate terms by military force. The coalition is actively coordinating with both the U.S. and Ukraine to support Ukraine’s defense and diplomatic efforts towards a sustainable resolution. Ukraine must have the freedom to decide on matters concerning its future, including its security arrangements and the size and capabilities of its armed forces.
