Civilian Tragedy in Kyiv: Over 300 Drone and Missile Attacks Cause Devastation

Recent months have seen an escalation of long-range drone and missile attacks on Kyiv, the capital city of Ukraine, resulting in significant civilian casualties and widespread damage.

The most devastating attack occurred on the night of August 1-2, when over 300 drones and eight missiles were launched towards Kyiv, hitting at least 27 locations. The Solomianskyi district was particularly affected, with a residential building and an educational institution sustaining damage. In the Sviatoshynskyi district, a fire destroyed vehicles and damaged a residential building, trapping victims under rubble.

The assault claimed the lives of at least 31 people, including at least one child, and left over 130 others wounded. Among the victims was Irina, a mother who had fled the fighting in the eastern Donetsk region before settling in Kyiv. Her daughters, Alina and Anastassia, were students at a school in the city.

Irina's final social media post showed the family meeting in eastern Ukraine with Igor, an active serviceman. Just days later, Igor lost his family in the attack, including his two daughters and his wife.

The remains of a nine-storey residential building were found in a leafy park next to a school, presumably the site of the attack. Roman Moskalenko, a 39-year-old doctor, was found beneath the rubble in Kyiv, remembered by his colleagues as attentive, caring, and professional.

Matviy Marchenko, a six-year-old boy, was buried outside the capital in his father's native village. The girls' school wrote on Facebook that Alina and Anastassia were sincere, kind, and bright, and they will remember their smiles, kind hearts, desire to live, and learn.

These attacks come amid ongoing hostilities and peace talks, with Ukraine also launching counter-drone measures. According to reports, during one recent night, 100 Russian drones were launched on Ukraine, with 70 intercepted and 30 impacting targets including Kyiv.

Broader context places these attacks in a pattern of escalating and relentless Russian aerial assaults across Ukraine, which have resulted in hundreds of civilian casualties in July 2025 alone—according to the UN, at least 139 civilians killed and 791 injured that month nationwide. Attacks have occurred far from frontlines, forcing civilians to seek shelter extensively in metro stations and basements.

In response, Ukrainian officials and President Zelensky condemned the attacks as part of Russia’s attempt to resist peace and emphasized the importance of international support to compel Moscow to negotiate. The attacks have heightened public fear and presented ongoing challenges for emergency response and civilian safety in Kyiv.

As the US-led efforts to end the more than three-year invasion of Ukraine seem to be stalling, the international community is urged to take action to prevent further loss of life and ensure the safety and security of Ukrainian civilians.
