Ukraine does not promise complete safety for travelers on religious pilgrimage, according to the Foreign Ministry.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, the State Border Service, and the United Jewish Community of Ukraine have issued statements regarding the upcoming celebration of Rosh Hashanah in Uman, a significant pilgrimage for the Jewish community.
Rosh Hashanah this year falls on the period from the evening of September 22 to the evening of September 24. According to data provided by the United Jewish Community of Ukraine, approximately 7,000 foreigners have already entered Ukraine for the occasion, and it is expected that around 35 thousand pilgrims will arrive in Uman for Rosh Hashanah this year.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a warning to Jewish pilgrims planning to visit Uman, citing potential issues such as an insufficient number of medical personnel and shelters in the city. The warning is due to the lack of guarantees for the full security of foreign citizens on the territory of Ukraine, given the ongoing full-scale aggression of Russia against Ukraine which poses a real threat to the lives and safety of people.
Traffic delays are possible due to shelling in Ukraine, and a legal regime of martial law is in effect which includes a curfew, increased patrolling, a ban on holding mass events and gatherings, and the application of coercive measures to individuals who do not comply with the established restrictions.
The State Border Guard Service is responsible for monitoring the entry of foreigners into Ukraine, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reminds pilgrims that they should take these potential issues into account when planning their visit. However, the exact number of pilgrims who will be in Uman for Rosh Hashanah is not specified in the article.
In previous years, the number of pilgrims for Rosh Hashanah in Uman has increased significantly. For instance, in 2024, about 33,5 thousand Breslov Hasidim arrived in Uman for the celebration and pilgrimage on the occasion of the Jewish New Year.
The celebration of Rosh Hashanah in Uman is a significant pilgrimage for the Jewish community, with many pilgrims travelling from all over the world to visit the grave of Rabbi Nachman of Breslov, the founder of the Breslov Hasidic movement. Despite the challenges, the Ukrainian authorities and community are preparing to welcome the pilgrims and ensure a safe and meaningful celebration.
