Ukraine braces for wild February weather with coastal warmth and mountain freezes
A mix of mild coastal warmth and bitter mountain cold will shape weather across Ukraine's southern regions on February 24 and 25. Strong southerly winds will sweep through, bringing gusts of up to 18 m/s along the Black Sea coast. Meanwhile, cities like Kyiv and Kharkiv will face sharp temperature swings and powerful gusts of their own.
Along the Black Sea coast, daytime temperatures will climb to 6–11°C on February 24, then rise slightly to 7–12°C the following day. Overnight, the mercury will stay mild, hovering between 4°C and 9°C. Skies will remain partly cloudy, with occasional spells of moderate rain. Winds will blow steadily from the south at 7–12 m/s, peaking at gusts of 15–18 m/s before easing to 12–14 m/s later in the period.
Further inland, Kyiv and Kharkiv will experience dramatic shifts. Kyiv's temperatures will range from 4°C to 9°C, while winds could reach 26–45 km/h. Kharkiv will see slightly cooler air, between 3°C and 10°C, with gusts of 15–39 km/h. Elsewhere, southern regions will warm to 5–10°C on February 24, then 7–12°C the next day.
The Azov Sea coast will also see a mild night on February 24–25, with temperatures between +1°C and +6°C. In contrast, mountain areas will stay freezing. Overnight lows there will drop to –3°C to –8°C, while daytime highs will barely reach –1°C to –6°C.
The coming days will bring a stark divide between coastal warmth and mountain chill. Strong winds, particularly along the Black Sea and in major cities, will add to the variability. Residents and travellers should prepare for rapidly changing conditions, from gusty rain near the sea to persistent cold in higher elevations.
