In a bold move to win over the Kamba community, the Deputy President, Kithure Kindiki, met with regional Members of County Assemblies (MCAs) on Monday. The discussion centered on promoting unity and spurring development at the grassroots.

More than 80 MCAs from Kitui, Makueni, and Machakos gathered at Kindiki's Karen residence, where the deputy president encouraged them to prioritize development in their regions and eschew divisive opposition politics.

With President William Ruto's administration aiming to transform Ukambani, Kindiki voiced his commitment to this initiative. He highlighted how the region has suffered from prolonged neglect under opposition rule for the past 15 years.

"We are not bringing development to Ukambani because of the 2027 election. We are developing your area because the people you represent are taxpayers and deserve development and service delivery," Kindiki declared.

The Kenya Kwanza government, according to Kindiki, is committed to treating all regions equitably, disregarding their voting patterns in the last presidential elections.

Upcoming meetings are planned with ndengu and pulse farmers from the Eastern region to discuss their integration into government programs and policies. This will include subsidies for fertilizers, similar to those in place for coffee, tea, sugarcane, and maize farmers across the country.

Addressing the expectations of Ukambani people, Kindiki acknowledged his close alliance with the region and encouraged them not to feel overlooked. "In me, you have a close ally. Do not feel left out. As a neighbor and brother, your interests are my interests," he pledged.

Concerning Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Kindiki expressed disappointment over his involvement in the opposition but remains optimistic about creating a mutually beneficial arrangement with the former Vice President.

The rise of Kindiki's outreach in Ukambani symbolizes a push for collaboration and inclusiveness, contrasting with past opposition-led marginalization of the region.

As the second leg of his Ukambani tour approaches, set for Thursday, it remains to be seen how both traditional political alliances and new, potentially more productive partnerships will evolve in this key region of Kenya.
