UK World Championships training for Indian boxers hindered by visa hold-ups, causing delays.
The Boxing Federation of India (BFI) is facing a significant challenge as visa-related complications have caused delays for a portion of the Indian boxing team's training trip to the United Kingdom ahead of the World Championships in Liverpool.
The interim committee of the BFI is actively coordinating with the Indian Embassy in the UK, the Sports Ministry, and the Sports Authority of India to expedite the visa process. Unfortunately, the delays have resulted in a disrupted travel plan, with some members of the team arriving in Sheffield as planned, while others, including the majority of the men's team and several women boxers, remain in the national camp in Patiala, waiting for visa clearance.
Two coaches are already in Sheffield with the women boxers, and a training plan has been established, complete with scheduled sparring sessions. However, the cancellation of the multinational training camp's sparring sessions was necessary due to the uncertainty surrounding the boxers' arrivals.
Sheffield is home to the Great Britain Boxing headquarters, one of the sport's most prominent training hubs. The multinational camp in Sheffield features teams from Ireland, France, Germany, Uzbekistan, the USA, Poland, and others. The camp runs from August 17 to September 1, providing valuable training opportunities for the participating boxers.
Among the women boxers who have reached Sheffield are Nikhat Zareen, Minakshi, Pooja Rani, and Nupur Sheoran. Head coach Dharmendra Yadav is already in Sheffield, but the male boxers currently have only one coach.
The World Championships, to be held from September 4 to 14 in Liverpool, will be the first to be held under the new governing body -- World Boxing. This edition will feature competitions across 10 weight classes for both men and women, and for the first time, male and female boxers will compete in Olympic-style events at the same championship.
Despite the challenges, the BFI is working diligently to resolve the visa issues and ensure the entire team can join the training camp in Sheffield. D Chandralal, women's head coach, has received his visa but has decided to stay back for the BFI elections. The team's preparations for the World Championships are crucial, and the BFI hopes to have all members of the team in place as soon as possible.
