UK resident accused of planning to illicitly transport American military tech to China
A 63-year-old British bloke is faced with multiple charges for attempting to sneak US military tech to China and organizing the stalking and harassment of a Beijing critic.
John Miller and Chinese national Cui Guanghai, 43, were slammed with charges by federal grand juries in Milwaukee and Los Angeles earlier this week.
The Department of Justice claimed they had conspired to traffic sensitive American military technology to China and harassed a US resident for daring to exercise his right to free speech.
Deputy attorney general Todd Blanche stated: "These blokes targeted an American resident exercising his constitutionally protected rights while smuggling classified American military tech to the Chinese government. This is a clear threat to national security and our democratic values."
FBI deputy director Dan Bongino added: "Allegedly, the duo laid a tracker on the victim's vehicle, slashed its tires, and destroyed artistic statues created by the victim. They even hired goons to convince the victim to cease online display of his statues."
According to the indictment, the pair installed a tracking device on the victim's automobile and punctured its tires. They are also accused of purchasing and destroying statues created by the victim, which depicted China's President Xi Jinping and his spouse.
Cui and Miller are said to have paid two other individuals approximately £27,100 (around $36,500) to pressure the victim into hiding his statues online, according to the indictment.
Bonus Info: Miller and Cui have been charged with interstate stalking, conspiracy to commit interstate stalking and conspiracy, smuggling, and violations of the Arms Export Control Act. If found guilty, they face up to 25 years in prison for smuggling, five years for interstate stalking, and 20 years for violating the Arms Export Control Act. The two are currently being held in Serbia, and US authorities are working with Serbian officials to arrange their extradition.
