UK authorities spotlight the dramatic alteration in Vietnam

In the heart of London, on September 16, 2021, a grand celebration was held to mark the 80th anniversary of Vietnam's National Day and the 15th anniversary of the Vietnam-UK Strategic Partnership. The event, attended by senior leaders from both countries and around 250 guests representing various sectors, was a testament to the deepening cooperation and growing friendship between the two nations.

Kyril Whittaker, a researcher on Vietnam's political history, highlighted Vietnam's people-centered development, citing anti-hunger and literacy campaigns, and gold donation drives launched by President Ho Chi Minh's government in 1945 as examples. Since then, Vietnam has transformed into a peaceful and stable country with a dynamic economy, a progressive society, a rich cultural heritage, and an ever-improving quality of life for its people.

Politburo member Nguyễn Xuân Thắng, President of the Hồ Chí Minh National Academy of Politics, spoke at the event and recalled Vietnam's journey since its Declaration of Independence in 1945. He emphasized that Vietnam attaches great importance to relations with the UK and the two countries have become equal and reliable partners over more than 50 years of diplomatic ties and 15 years of Strategic Partnership.

Speaking at the event, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State Seema Malhotra praised Vietnam's journey from post-war reconstruction to one of the world's fastest-growing economies. She emphasized progress in UK-Vietnam ties, including trade, education, climate, green finance, digital transformation, financial center development, net-zero goals, and cooperation against organized crime and illegal migration.

The British person who spoke at the celebration, while not named in the available sources, expressed recognition of Vietnam's rise over the past eight decades. He stressed that the 15-year strategic partnership between the UK and Vietnam is not only about cooperation but also about friendship, connection, and shared responsibility for global security.

The UK is ready to share expertise in international financial center development and advance collaboration in green finance, net zero, and digital transition with Vietnam. The event included an art exhibition by young Vietnamese painter Xeo Chu, musical performances by international artists, and traditional Vietnamese cuisine, adding a touch of cultural exchange to the celebration.

Hoyle noted that the National Day celebration in London with the presence of many ambassadors reflects Vietnam's growing international standing. Malhotra emphasized that cooperation between the two countries has deepened across various fields, including politics, defence, security, trade, education, finance, high technology, energy transition, and climate response.

Nguyễn Xuân Thắng also pointed out that amid global uncertainties, Vietnam pursues an independent, self-reliant foreign policy centred on peace, diversification, and multilateralism, and sees this as a timely opportunity to elevate its Strategic Partnership with the UK. Việt Nam has become a trusted partner of nearly 200 nations and an active, responsible member of the international community.

The transformation of Việt Nam over the past eight decades is a testament to the nation's strength and determination. As the two countries continue to strengthen their partnership, the future holds exciting prospects for UK-Vietnam relations.
