UK authorities preparing to acknowledge Palestine, according to Badenoch, potentially endorsing acts of terror due to Starmer's decision.
The United Kingdom is set to announce its formal recognition of Palestine as early as Sunday, a move that is expected to spark a diplomatic row with Israel and the US. This decision comes after Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer announced his plans to recognise a Palestinian state in July, with the condition that Israel takes "substantive steps" towards peace in Gaza.
During a joint press conference with the Prime Minister at Chequers on Thursday, Sir Keir Starmer denied allegations that he was waiting for the US president to leave the UK before announcing recognition. The US President, Donald Trump, disagreed with recognition but did not repeat previous comments about it rewarding Hamas.
Israel's Prime Minister, Netanyahu, firmly rejects the idea of Palestinian statehood and condemns such recognition as a reward for terrorism. This stance has been echoed by Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch, who accused Sir Keir Starmer of giving Hamas a "reward for terrorism." Badenoch also stated that she would "never apologise for standing by Israel when it strikes back against terrorism."
Sir Keir, however, has made it clear that Hamas should have no part in any future governance in Palestine. He also stated that Hamas does not want a two-state solution and does not want peace or a ceasefire. The situation in Gaza has deteriorated, with a declaration of a famine in Gaza City and the expansion of Israeli military operations.
Israeli President Isaac Herzog stated that recognizing Palestine "won't help one Palestinian, one hostage" and could be "adversely interpreted by Hamas." Other countries like Canada, Australia, and Portugal have already recognized Palestine, and their actions have also drawn Israeli criticism.
Labour's foreign policy, according to Badenoch, is to "condemn our allies, indulge our adversaries and hand away our sovereignty." Despite this criticism, Sir Keir Starmer made his position on recognizing Palestine clear at the end of July.
There is no information about any prior context or other Labour MPs being denied entry to Israel during a West Bank visit. The recognition of Palestine by the UK Government is set to add a new dimension to the already complex Middle East political landscape.
