UK announces disbarment of Indian-origin attorney for fabricating Oxford degree claims
The Barristers' Standards Board (BSB) has declared the disbarment of Anurag Mohindru, a 50-year-old Indian-origin lawyer, following a finding of professional misconduct. The UK's Barristers' Tribunal Service ordered the disbarment, reflecting the seriousness of his misconduct and the importance of maintaining the integrity of the Bar.
The misconduct in question involved providing false information on his curriculum vitae during an application to a chambers in 2012. Specifically, Mohindru claimed to have studied biomedical science or medicine at Oxford University, a claim that was found to be untrue by an independent disciplinary tribunal.
The tribunal commenced on September 8 and concluded on September 12, during which the panel decided to order the immediate suspension of Mohindru, pending any appeal. In a statement, the BSB reaffirmed their commitment to upholding the integrity of the Bar and maintaining public trust in the profession. They reiterated the importance of barristers being honest when applying for positions within a chambers.
The BSB spokesperson emphasized the seriousness of the misconduct, stating that it was a breach of the standards expected of members of the Bar. Dishonesty, such as the one committed by Mohindru, undermines the trust and confidence that the public places in barristers and in the profession as a whole.
In a separate development, Mohindru stepped down as a Board Member of the Essex County Cricket Club. The club confirmed his decision in a statement, stating that he informed the Board of his decision at a meeting on Sunday.
The Law Society of England and Wales also decided to dismiss Mohindru for deceiving about his Oxford University education. The disbarment of Anurag Mohindru is a clear demonstration of the BSB's commitment to ensuring that the Bar maintains the highest standards of integrity and professionalism.
