UK aligns with Estonia following Russian aircraft breaching airspace, inciting NATO action
In a notable incident on Friday, Estonia's airspace was violated by three Russian jets, marking the third such violation of NATO airspace in less than a week. The Russian jets, flying from Karelia to an airfield in the Kaliningrad region, remained in Estonian airspace for 12 minutes, according to the NATO spokesperson. This unexpected incursion occurred 10 days after Russian drones entered Polish airspace and six days after another Russian drone was intercepted flying over Romania. The incident was confirmed by NATO, with Italian Air Force F-35 fighter jets being deployed to intercept and defend against the Russian jets. The ministry claims that the aircraft's flight route lay over neutral waters of the Baltic Sea, more than three kilometers from Vaindloo Island. However, the Russian Ministry of Defence denies that the jets entered Estonian airspace, stating that their flights were 'conducted in strict compliance with international airspace regulations.' Prime Minister Donald Tusk of Poland warned that his country was the closest to 'open conflict' it had been since the Second World War due to the incident. The EU high representative for foreign affairs, Kaja Kallas, described the incident as an 'extremely dangerous provocation' and warned that Russian President Vladimir Putin was 'testing the West's resolve.' In response to the incident, the UK announced it would provide Warsaw with extra air cover in the form of RAF jets. The Foreign Secretary of the UK has stated that the UK stands with Estonia. Yvette Cooper, a UK politician, expressed support for Estonia on social media following the incident. The Estonian foreign ministry also summoned Russia's senior diplomat in Tallinn over the incident. The Polish government has called for a meeting of NATO foreign ministers to discuss the issue. The incident highlights growing tensions in the region and raises concerns about Russia news and aggression. As the international community responds, it remains to be seen how this situation will unfold.
