UH Football's Comparison with Portland State Contests
Portland State University (PSU) and the University of Hawaii (UH) are set to face off tonight in Honolulu, with both teams looking to secure a victory in the Mountain West Conference.
On the PSU side, Bryant Thomas serves as the defensive coordinator, while Aedan Seiuli holds the strong safety position, known as the "viking." Notably, John-Keawe Sagapolutele, a transfer from Hawaii, is currently the starting quarterback for PSU. Sagapolutele made his first NCAA start last week and will be looking to build on his performance.
Coaching at PSU is led by Bruce Barnum, who has been in the game for 40 years. Barnum is renowned for his offensive innovations and has been influenced by coaches like Mike Price, Mouse Davis, and June Jones. Derek Faavi, the O-line coach, prefers the coaches' box for a bird's-eye view.
PSU has had a challenging start to the season, beginning with an 0-3 record and being outscored 116-0 in the first two games. However, they will be hoping for a turnaround against UH.
On the UH side, Anthony Arceneaux serves as the offensive coordinator, and he is now on the sideline during games. Quarterback Micah Alejado's availability for the game is listed as a "game-time decision" due to a foot ailment. If Alejado is unable to play, Luke Weaver, a former JC All-American, will step up. Weaver performed well in Alejado's absence, throwing three TD passes and directing three scoring drives.
UH's running back Landon Sims is used in their two-tight-end set to misdirect pass rushers and catch middle or bubble screens. De'Jon Benton, on the defensive line, is compared to former UH All-American Al Noga for his versatility. Lester Lagafuaina has shown strong performances similar to Travis LaBoy, with a 3-yard loss, a hurried incompletion, and a sack last week.
Branden Alvarez, the team's leading receiver, did not play last week, and his status for tonight's game is unclear. Cru Newman, a receiver and returner for PSU, is also part-owner of a landscaping business. Kuao Peihopa, the right guard, has returned from a leg injury and is contributing to improved pass protection.
Hawaii football currently sits fifth in the Mountain West Conference with a record of 2-1. They will be aiming to climb the ranks with a win against PSU.
The game against Portland State resumes tonight at 6 p.m. in Honolulu. Fans are eagerly awaiting an exciting contest between these two teams.
