UFC 199 Bantamweight Division Overview
In the competitive world of UFC's bantamweight division, several fighters have made their mark and are vying for the coveted title.
Current champion Dominick Cruz (21-1, 4-0 UFC) has been a dominant force in the division. He regained the bantamweight title by edging T.J. Dillashaw via decision in January 2016, avenging his loss to Faber in 2011 with a close decision.
T.J. Dillashaw (12-3, 8-3) has made a name for himself with TKO victories over former champ Renan Barao. However, he suffered a setback against Cruz and will face Merab Dvalishvili in July.
Raphael Assuncao (23-4, 7-1) has long been on the cusp of a title shot in the bantamweight division. He holds wins over T.J. Dillashaw (2013) and Bryan Caraway (2014). However, he was KO'd by Cody Garbrandt, who has a bright future in the division.
Cody Garbrandt (9-0, 4-0) has been impressive in his UFC career so far. He defeated Thomas Almeida (20-1, 4-1) in his last bout.
Thomas Almeida was on a promising streak until his loss to Garbrandt. Before that, he had won four consecutive fights in the UFC.
John Dodson (18-7, 7-2) moved up to 135 pounds after losing to Demetrius Johnson. He made a name for himself by winning "The Ultimate Fighter" by knocking out T.J. Dillashaw in 2011.
Aljamain Sterling (12-1, 4-1) has been impressing the UFC audience with his wins, including a recent victory over respected veteran Takeya Mizugaki. He also defeated Bryan Caraway (21-7, 6-2) in his last bout, marking Caraway's first career loss.
John Lineker (27-7, 8-2) could also be on the rise in the bantamweight division. Iuri Alcantara (32-7, 7-4) has shown potential and could make waves in the division as well.
Urijah Faber (33-8, 9-4) continues to compete at the highest level in the UFC, despite being 37 years old. Faber is likely fighting for his last chance at championship glory in the UFC.
Several other fighters are expected to compete in upcoming bouts, including Darrion Caldwell, Eduardo Dantas, Bibiano Fernandes, Marcos Galvao, Marlon Moraes, and Joe Warren.
Jimmie Rivera (19-1, 3-0) hasn't lost since his pro debut in 2008. He will undoubtedly be a force to reckon with in the bantamweight division.
The bantamweight division in the UFC is shaping up to be an exciting one, with several top contenders and promising newcomers. The upcoming bouts promise to add more excitement and drama to this already thrilling division.
