The 2025 UEFA Super Cup in Udine: A Celebration of Football and Sustainability
The city of Udine, Italy, played host to the 2025 UEFA Super Cup, a historic event that brought together elite club achievements and meaningful social and environmental initiatives. The match, held at the Stadio Friuli on August 13, 2025, saw Paris Saint-Germain (UEFA Champions League winners) defeat Tottenham Hotspur (UEFA Europa League winners) on penalties to claim their first Super Cup and become the first French club to win the competition.
The event was organised in collaboration with Promoturismo FVG and Bluenergy, and hosted by the Fondazione Friuli. Udine's Mayor, Alberto Felice De Toni, gave an institutional speech at the event, expressing his gratitude for the honour of hosting the Super Cup and acknowledging the great sporting tradition of Friuli. De Toni also thanked the Pozzo family for their years of commitment to Serie A and the hosting of the event.
In terms of environmental sustainability, while no explicit detailed environmental program was specified, the event featured extensive community and social engagement activities in Udine. The UEFA Foundation for Children used the occasion to emphasise football’s broader social impact, inviting vulnerable local children to experience the event, contributing to a sustainable social legacy that aligns with UEFA’s commitment to social responsibility. The event also celebrated the foundation’s 10th anniversary, showcasing a decade-long impact with nearly 577 projects in 138 countries aimed at empowering youth worldwide.
Regarding club achievements, Paris Saint-Germain won the 2024–25 UEFA Champions League and claimed their first UEFA Super Cup title by prevailing 4–3 on penalties after a 2–2 draw. Tottenham Hotspur won the 2024–25 UEFA Europa League and participated in their first UEFA Super Cup.
The hosting city of Udine embraced the event with cultural festivities, fan zones, and a travelling "Trophy Experience" tour showcasing the Champions League, Europa League, and Super Cup trophies throughout the Friuli Venezia Giulia region. The Stadio Friuli, home of Udinese Calcio, was selected by the UEFA Executive Committee as the 2025 host venue, marking the 13th stadium to hold the Super Cup since the one-off format changed from Monaco.
The first panel of the morning at the UEFA Super Cup focused on sustainability. Magda Pozzo, UEFA executive director for social and environmental sustainability, participated in the panel, stating that the choice to dedicate one of the panels to sustainability was significant, as it is a crucial theme for Udinese and impressed UEFA during the selection process.
The second panel of the day shifted focus to football. Oliver Bierhoff, Gerard Deulofeu, and Gokhan Inler, champions of Udinese's history, participated in the football panel. Gabriele Gravina, the President of FIGC, attended the event and gave a speech, expressing appreciation for the Pozzo family, the Mayor of Udine, and the President of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia Region. Gravina stated that the assignment of the final to Udine is a reward for the vision of the Pozzo family and Udinese in the perspective of integral sustainability.
Michele Uva and Alberta Gervasio, CEO of Bluenergy, also participated in the sustainability panel. Franco Collavino, director general of Udinese Calcio, concluded the event, expressing pride that the day of the Super Cup had finally arrived, acknowledging it as a recognition of Udinese's work over the years. Collavino also expressed a dream/objective for Euro 2032 as a future goal.
