Udaipur Movie Release Granted by Supreme Court Featuring Vijay Raaz in Lead Role
In a dramatic turn of events, the Supreme Court has refused to urgently list and has declined to stay the release of the controversial film, 'Udaipur Files: Kanhaiya Lal Tailor Murder'. The film, scheduled to hit theatres on July 11, 2025, has been mired in controversy due to a petition by one of the accused, Mohammed Javed, who argues that the film's release could prejudice the ongoing trial and affect his right to a fair trial.
The film, directed by R. Madhesh, stars Vijay Raaz as Kanhaiya Lal, a tailor from Udaipur, Rajasthan, who was beheaded on June 28, 2022. The attackers, Mohammad Riyaz Attari and Ghaus Muhammad, were arrested hours after the murder, while Mohammed Javed was arrested nearly a month later.
Javed contends that the trailers and promotional materials appear "communally provocative" and portray the accused as guilty before the court's verdict. He also argues that the film's release could potentially influence the trial. In response to this, the Delhi High Court directed the producers to arrange a screening for the petitioners who are seeking a ban on its release.
The Supreme Court, however, has allowed the film to be released, stating that concerns about potential trial influence should be addressed by a regular bench after the summer recess. The bench comprising Justices Sudhanshu Dhulia and Joymalya Bagchi advised that the petitioner could bring up the matter after the summer vacation.
The film, produced by Abhishek Pathak and starring Rajneesh Duggal, Preeti Jhangiani, Kamlesh Sawant, Kanchi Singh, and Mushtaq Khan, among others, was originally scheduled for release on June 27, 2025, but has now been moved to July 11, 2025. The investigation of the murder case was handled by the National Investigation Agency, and the trial is currently pending before the special NIA court in Jaipur.
