UCLA experiences another shake-up following a disappointing 0-3 start, as defensive coordinator Ikaika Malloe decides to depart.
UCLA Bruins Shake Up Coaching Staff and Focus on Change
The UCLA Bruins are currently struggling in the 2025 season, with a record of 0-3. In a bid to turn things around, the team has made some significant changes.
Football coach DeShaun Foster has been relieved of his duties, and UCLA defensive coordinator Ikaika Malloe has parted ways with the team, citing responsibility for the team's poor start. Tim Skipper, who has served as an interim coach before, leading Fresno State to a 6-7 record in 2024, has taken over as the interim head coach at UCLA during the search for a new head coach.
Skipper has a clear vision for the team, focusing on changing their style of play, playing harder and faster, and giving a product that everyone is proud of. He has spent part of the last few days introducing himself to UCLA players and sharing his coaching history. In the meantime, Skipper will take a collaborative approach among remaining staff to coach the defense.
Malloe, a respected assistant coach known for demanding as much from himself as anyone on the team and for improving UCLA's defense in the past, will be missed. Garrett DiGiorgio, an offensive tackle, expressed sadness over Malloe's departure and support for him moving forward.
The team's morale is being rebuilt, with players attempting to rediscover the joy in football by playing music in the locker room and meeting with athletic director Martin Jarmond every Sunday. Jarmond, who is involved in the process of hiring the next football coach, supports the decision to replace the coach.
The Bruins' defense has struggled this season, giving up an average of 36 points and 431 yards per game. Success for the rest of the season, according to Skipper, will not be measured by wins and losses but by the style of play. His motto for the team is to simplify things and play full speed ahead with less thinking.
No immediate roster defections have been reported, with players having 30 days to enter the transfer portal. The bye week is being treated as a 'mini-training camp' by Skipper, with the focus on playing harder and faster.
Chancellor Julio Frenk supports Jarmond's decision to replace the football coach, and the search for a new head coach continues. The Bruins will look to regroup and turn their season around, with the hope of returning to their winning ways.
