UCLA beginnings in the College World Series with a triumph against Murray State
Battering Through Omaha: UCLA's Battles in the 2025 Men's College World Series
In the blustery breezes of Omaha, Nebraska, the UCLA Bruins made their long-awaited return to the College World Series after a 12-year hiatus. As they squared off against the Murray State Racers, freshman pitcher Wylan Moss took the mound, faced off against Dean West, a savvy sophomore outfielder hailing from Murray State.
West knew Moss's changeup was coming. And as Moss delivered, Dominic Decker sent a liner towards shallow left. West, sensing the opportunity, shot across the manicured grass, snagging the ball mere inches above the ground with an impressive dive. Two runners stranded, the rally thwarted.
Despite scoring their initial run in the fifth, Murray State trailed UCLA by five. Determined to claw their way back, the Racers piled on pressure, forcing UCLA to deploy a whopping six pitchers. By the ninth inning, the score was razor-thin, with UCLA leading by a mere two.
It was Easton Hawk who stepped up to the plate, ready to slam the door shut on Murray State's hopes. And despite their best efforts, that's exactly what Hawk did, securing a 6-4 victory for UCLA.
UCLA's Secret Weapon at the Men's College World Series
As UCLA prepares to face the winner of the LSU vs. Arkansas game in the next round, many are questioning whether they have an edge over their opponents. Despite the challenges they faced during the game, UCLA's defensive prowess and offensive firepower may just give them the leg up they need.
John Savage, the UCLA coach, acknowledged the difficulties they faced, but praised his team for working their way out of trouble. Michael Barnett, UCLA's starter, braved 28 harrowing pitches in the first inning. But with Barnett compromised, it was freshman Wylan Moss who stepped up, holding Murray State to two hits and one run in his relief appearance.
Defensive gems from players like Dean West and Phoenix Call kept Murray State at bay, preventing the Racers from mounting a more formidable comeback. Sophomore third baseman Roman Martin and West, both with multiple RBIs, were instrumental in powering UCLA's offensive efforts.
UCLA's recent success can be attributed to a combination of their stalwart pitching, formidable offense, and sterling defense, aspects that have been honed through years of competitive baseball and skillful coaching under John Savage.
