UAE Leader Conducts Formal Visit to Azerbaijan, Celebrating Events in Shusha
In a historic visit, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the President of the United Arab Emirates, touched down in Azerbaijan on September 16. President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan welcomed Sheikh Mohamed at Fuzuli International Airport, marking the beginning of an official visit filled with cultural and historical programmes.
Upon arrival, a guard of honour was lined up for Sheikh Mohamed at the airport. This warm welcome was a prelude to the formal ceremony that awaited him in Shusha, where a similar guard of honour was arranged in the city square. The leaders inspected the guards, heard the national anthems of the United Arab Emirates and Azerbaijan, and watched the ceremonial march.
The official programme commenced with an exploration of the city of Fuzuli by car. The leaders then proceeded to Shusha, a city with a rich history and significant cultural importance to Azerbaijan. In Shusha, they visited bullet-riddled monuments of prominent Azerbaijani figures and the Shusha branch of the National Carpet Museum.
One of the highlights of the visit was the unveiling of the New Shusha Mosque project. Anar Alakbarov, Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan, briefed the two presidents on the project. The design of the mosque symbolises the liberation of Shusha and Karabakh, with its overall structure featuring geometric patterns inspired by Shusha's historic mosques. The New Shusha Mosque's foundation was laid by President Ilham Aliyev in 2021.
The leaders also attended a Karabakh horses show at Jidir Duzu plain, where President Aliyev presented a Karabakh horse named "Ergunesh" to Sheikh Mohamed.
During their visit, the leaders held a one-on-one meeting and an expanded session with delegations in Shusha. The discussions, as well as the names of the persons involved in the negotiations, have not been publicly specified.
The visit concluded with a luncheon hosted in Shusha on behalf of President Ilham Aliyev in honour of Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The leaders also posed for photographs in front of the Shusha Fortress, marking the end of a successful and culturally enriching official visit.
A notable aspect of the New Shusha Mosque is that the two minarets of the mosque are set to represent the eleventh month of the year when liberation was achieved. This visit serves as a testament to the growing relations between the United Arab Emirates and Azerbaijan.
