UAE Extends Passport Renewal Timeframe to a Year Prior to Expiration Date
UAE Passport Renewal Rules Update Strengthens Global Standing
Starting on Monday, August 18, 2025, UAE passport holders will enjoy greater travel planning flexibility and a more seamless renewal process, as the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Ports Security (ICP) implements changes to the passport renewal rules.
One of the key changes is an extension of the passport renewal limit from six months to one year. This means that citizens can now renew their passports up to a year before expiry, providing ample time to arrange international travel without worrying about renewal concerns or last-minute hassles.
The extended renewal period also helps prevent delays in visa applications, official formalities, and international trips that can be affected by limited passport validity. This, in turn, reduces disruptions and ensures a smoother travel experience for UAE citizens.
The ICP’s smart services platform will be used to execute the renewal process, encouraging broader adoption of digital identity and travel document management. This move streamlines renewals and official transactions, making it more convenient for citizens to manage their travel documents digitally.
Ali Mohammed Al Shamsi, the Chairman of the ICP, has stated that the aim of these changes is to enhance citizens' quality of life and promote the use of secure digital documents. The changes are also part of the UAE government's commitment to innovative, user-centric passport services, further strengthening the UAE passport's reputation as a leading global travel document.
As a result of these updates, the UAE passport is expected to climb up the ranks of the world's most powerful and trusted travel documents. Currently ranked 8th in 2025, the UAE passport provides visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 185 countries, up from 15th place in 2022 and 11th in 2024.
The extension complements this status by enhancing user experience and demonstrating the UAE government's commitment to modernizing passport services, aligning with international best practices. For instance, the passport validity has already been extended to 10 years for citizens aged 21 and above from 2024.
In summary, the extension of the UAE passport renewal period to one year before expiry significantly enhances travel planning flexibility for UAE citizens, promotes the use of digital passport services, and aligns with the UAE passport’s position as a leading global travel document. These updates are expected to position the UAE passport system as a regional and international benchmark.
