U.S. Vetoes UN Security Council Proposal for Gaza Ceasefire Resolution

Fresh Take:

The UN Security Council (UNSC) draft resolution for a ceasefire in Gaza went down the tubes, thanks to a US veto. According to TASS, this latest move follows a similar veto in November 2021, and a previous one that had Israel's game plan up its sleeve.

Now, ten non-permanent members of the UNSC had put together this draft resolution. Guess who was the lone wolf not onboard? That's right, the good ol' US of A.

So, what's the hustle about this resolution and why did Uncle Sam stick its neck out? Well, historically, the US has a statement of requirements before lending its seal of approval. One, it wants full-blown condemnation of Hamas's tomfoolery in the past. Two, it wants guarantees for Israeli security and three, it won't play ball if the resolution smells of bias against Israel.

Now, these vetoes don't come cheap. They stir up quite a storm in the Middle East, escalating the conflict, worsening the humanitarian crisis, and making peace talks more elusive. internationally, they can lead to criticism, diplomatic isolation, and a dent in the US’s reputation as a peace broker.

analysts believe these vetoes give Israel a free pass, complicating efforts for a lasting peace. Russia, on the other hand, ain't taking it lying down. In response to the veto, their foreign ministry has big plans to step up its game in the UNSC and other international platforms.

As for Israel, it's still playing its cards close to its chest—no word on what's next for Gaza, but it ain't gonna be sugar and spice!

  1. The ongoing war-and-conflicts in Gaza, particularly the recent draft resolution for a ceasefire, have become a contentious issue in the realm of policy-and-legislation and international politics, as the US's repeated vetoes in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) suggest.
  2. The vetoes on the Gaza ceasefire draft resolution by the US have led to significant fallouts, resulting in increased general-news coverage about escalating conflicts, worsening humanitarian crises, and elusive peace talks in the Middle East, as well as international criticism and potential damage to the US's reputation as a peace broker.
