U.S. Treasury imposes sanctions on ex-mayor Hilda Araceli Brown Figueredo
In a significant move against drug trafficking and organised crime, the U.S. Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has imposed financial sanctions on several individuals and companies linked to the Sinaloa Cartel, a notorious Mexican drug trafficking organisation.
The sanctions include 14 companies owned by Jesús González Lomeli, a Rosarito-based business magnate, and six individuals associated with "Los Mayos," a faction of the Sinaloa Cartel. Among the sanctioned individuals is Hila Araceli Brown Figueredo, the former mayor of Rosarito, Baja California, and a current deputy for the 9th district of Baja California.
Brown is accused of acting as an intermediary between the leaders of "Los Mayos," Alfonso and René Arzate García, and the Rosarito municipal government during her tenure as mayor. The U.S. government alleges that Candelario Arcega Aguirre, a "political operator affiliated with the Sinaloa Cartel," had a close personal relationship with Brown and controlled parts of the municipal government, appointing his allies to high-level positions within the Rosarito government.
"Los Mayos" is engaged in an open war with "Los Chapitos," led by the sons of Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán. The Treasury accuses "Los Mayos" of trafficking fentanyl, cocaine, marijuana, heroin, and methamphetamine. The sanctioned companies are accused of being owned, controlled, or directed by González, or for having acted or purported to act for or on behalf of, directly or indirectly, the Sinaloa Cartel.
Together, these entities are accused of collecting extortion payments for the Arzates, helping manage their operations, and ensuring the protection of their criminal activities by the Rosarito Public Security Department.
In addition to Brown and Arcega, the U.S. Treasury also sanctioned a transport company owned by Candelario Arcega Aguirre: Transporte Urbano Y Suburbano Del V Municipio.
The sanctions against these individuals and companies are part of the U.S. government's ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking and organised crime in Mexico and beyond. However, no information has been provided about the EU's sanctioned list in this matter.
