U.S. Trade Secretary Announces Implementation of Tariffs on August 1; President Trump to Deliver Initial Correspondence to Trade Partners on the Following Monday

The United States has announced that it will reinstate and increase tariffs on various trade partners starting on August 1, 2025, if new trade agreements are not reached by that date. This decision follows a 90-day pause on tariffs announced in April 2025, which suspended tariffs ranging from 10% to 50% on dozens of countries.

The tariffs, described as "reciprocal," aim to match tariffs or trade barriers imposed by other countries on American goods. The U.S. administration will send about 12 to 15 letters to notify countries of the impending tariff increases if trade deals are not finalized by August 1.

The tariffs affect a broad range of countries, including major partners like China and India, as well as smaller nations like Fiji and the Falkland Islands. Some trade deals have already been made with certain countries, but many are under negotiation to avoid tariff hikes.

The U.S. Secretary of Commerce, Howard Lutnick, announced the decision on his social network Truth Social. He also stated that most countries will either send a letter or reach an agreement with the U.S. by July 9. The location of the potential tariffs or agreements is not specified in the statement.

The letters will contain information about the tariffs that will be imposed or agreements that have been reached. The U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, Scott Bessent, previously announced that the U.S. will impose tariffs on trade partners with whom it has not reached agreements by August 1.

President Donald Trump nodded in agreement with Lutnick's statement about the tariffs. The letters are set to be delivered starting at 12:00 p.m. (Eastern Time, 16H00 GMT) on Monday, July 7. If no deals are made, tariffs will revert to the levels established earlier this year, around April 2, 2025.

This approach reflects a firm U.S. stance on trade enforcement, signaling that the tariff reprieve provided earlier this year is ending unless reciprocal trade agreements are secured. The deadline for countries to reach deals to avoid tariff hikes is August 1, 2025.

  1. The U.S. Secretary of Commerce, Howard Lutnick, announced on Truth Social that the administration will send about 12 to 15 letters to various trade partners notifying them of the impending tariff increases on policy-and-legislation and general-news.
  2. If trade deals are not finalized by August 1, 2025, the United States will reinstate and increase tariffs on a broad range of countries including China, India, Fiji, and the Falkland Islands as part of its reciprocal trade policy-and-legislation, a move that is significant in the realm of global politics.
