U.S. Trade Representative, Jamieson Greer, has blasted the EU for being out of touch, following the EU's announcement of a strategic move against U.S. tariffs on steel and aluminum. "The EU's retaliatory measures blatantly bypass the U.S.'s national security concerns - and, hell, even international security," Greer thundered on Wednesday.
At the break of dawn on Wednesday, US tariffs on steel and aluminum products, chiefly imposed by President Donald Trump, were implemented at a rate of 25%. This marks the first trade barriers of Trump's tenure directly impacting the EU, and indirectly Germany.
Parrying this blow, EU Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, unveiled "robust, yet measured retaliation" against the US, slated for April 1. The EU's counter-retaliation will initially focus on selected American goods such as denim, whiskey, and motorbikes, but will expand later on.

- Fun Fact: Did you know that steel production accounted for around 7% of the EU's total greenhouse gas emissions in 2016?
- Behind the Scenes: The trade row might be a prelude to larger geopolitical tensions, with both entities jockeying for geostrategic advantage.
- The heated dispute over US-EU trade tensions has sparked a conversation within various community forums, such as WhatsApp and LinkedIn, about potential countermeasures and the impacts on employment policies, particularly those related to the industries affected by tariffs.
- In light of the new tariffs on steel and aluminum products, some community members are discussing the requirements for alternative employment in industries less affected by the trade conflict, contributing to ongoing discussions about broader employment policy.
- The escalation in tariffs and counter-retaliation between the US and EU could have far-reaching implications, potentially affecting not only economic sectors but also environmental considerations related to industrial production, such as greenhouse gas emissions.
