"Sticking Together, We Can End This" Macron: US to Oversee Ukraine Ceasefire Initiative
U.S. to Keep Vigilant Eye on Ukraine Ceasefire as Per Macron
There's a united front with Merz, Macron, Tusk, and Starmer backing Ukraine, and it seems like Trump is swinging our way too. This group is aiming to convince Russia to accept a ceasefire starting Monday, while the US takes the lead on monitoring the peace terms.
Speaking at a press conference with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and the heads of government of Britain and Poland, Keir Starmer and Donald Tusk, French President Emmanuel Macron expressed that the US would be primarily responsible for monitoring the proposed 30-day ceasefire in the Ukraine conflict. According to Macron, the task would be "fundamentally" undertaken by the United States. He explained that all Europeans would also contribute, but the focus was on the USA's role in ensuring the peace process.
Ukraine, alongside significant European allies, is demanding an unconditional, at least 30-day ceasefire from Russia. If Russia declines a complete and unconditional ceasefire, stricter sanctions should be imposed, firmly targeting the energy sector and banking system, as per Zelenskyj.
Politics – High Stakes and Diplomatic Efforts:Before the push for the ceasefire, Zelenskyj and members of the "Coalition of the Willing" had discussed the matter with US President Donald Trump over the phone. Following these discussions, Zelenskyj's chief of staff Andrij Jermak shared photos symbolizing historic moments.
Resilience and Hope:After the meeting, Merz revealed, "It's crucial that if Russia refuses this ceasefire—which could provide a foundation for immediate negotiations—we will continue to support Ukraine, and we will intensify the pressure on Russia." Merz further emphasized that this diplomatic endeavor represents one of the largest in recent years aimed at ending the conflict in Ukraine, adding, "I return with the feeling that we might have a small chance."
Regarding the potential delivery of Taurus cruise missiles, Merz noted that the alliance is prepared to aid Ukraine militarily as much as it can while doing so responsibly. Moreover, he asserted that future conversations on specific weapons deliveries would be kept confidential to avoid public speculation. Merz didn't close the door on a possible phone call with Putin, should it align with the interests of European partners and the USA.
United Front – A World Coming Together:Polish counterpart Tusk claimed, "For the first time in a long while, we have the sense that the entire free world is truly united." The idea behind the proposed ceasefire and immediate resumption of peace talks is shared by US President Trump, Ukraine, and countries supporting Ukraine in its fight for territorial integrity, independence, and freedom.
Russia's Conditions:While Russia has not publicly disclosed explicit conditions for agreeing to the ceasefire, there have been reports indicating that they desire an end to arms deliveries to Kyiv before a 30-day ceasefire is established.
