In a surprising turn of events, US broadcaster ABC has temporarily removed Jimmy Kimmel's talk show from its schedule following his comments about the assassination of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk. The decision comes amidst a fierce debate in the United States about how to discuss Kirk's death, whose controversial views were highly polarizing.

Trump and his government have announced that they will take action against commentators who, in their opinion, do not express themselves appropriately about Kirk. The President expressed satisfaction with ABC's decision, having previously targeted Kimmel, along with Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers, for mocking him sharply.

Kimmel suggested that the suspected assassin of Kirk might have been part of the "Make America Great Again" (MAGA) movement. His comments were deemed offensive and insensitive by many, including media company Nexstar, which broadcasts ABC content via local TV stations.

The controversy has also extended to ZDF journalist Elmar Theveßen, who works as a correspondent in Washington. He faced criticism after his comments related to Kirk's death and criticism of Trump's deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller. Richard Grenell, former Trump envoy to Germany and close ally, labeled Theveßen as a "left-wing radical" and called for his visa to be revoked.

ZDF, however, asserted that Theveßen's work is protected by press freedom, a high value in both Germany and the United States. The shows of Kimmel, Fallon, Meyers, and others expose political falsehoods and populist absurdities more directly than any news broadcast. Critics fear that this could lead to a suppression of press and freedom of expression in the United States.

The show will be "taken off the air indefinitely," according to US media reports. Late-night shows have been under particular pressure since the cancellation of Stephen Colbert's talk show on CBS. Trump has repeatedly made it clear that, besides Colbert, Kimmel is particularly annoying to him.

As the situation continues to unfold, the future of these popular talk shows remains uncertain, sparking concerns about freedom of speech and the role of satire in American media.
