In a move that could ease diplomatic tensions, Colombian President Gustavo Petro has not prevented U.S. Undersecretary of State Christopher Landau from attending the funeral of slain senator Miguel Uribe. The decision comes amidst a series of disputes between the two countries, particularly around issues of sovereignty and deportation policies.

Uribe, a prominent Colombian senator, was seriously injured after being shot twice in the head and once in the leg during a campaign event in Bogotá on June 7, 2022. He passed away in a hospital in July, following his hospitalization. The attack was reportedly carried out by at least ten individuals, according to the Colombian Prosecutor's Office, with a 15-year-old teenager being arrested for firing the shots.

The State Department has expressed solidarity with the Colombian people and conveyed its deepest condolences to Uribe's family, highlighting his commitment to serving his country and strengthening relations between the United States and Colombia.

President Petro, however, has been critical of U.S.-Colombia relations, suggesting he had considered preventing Landau's entry to the country. He has denounced political manipulation made against Uribe while he was in a complete state of disability. Petro has also stated that there is not a single piece of evidence in the investigation that suggests the government is responsible for Uribe's assassination.

In response to criticism, Petro has announced that he will file complaints with the Court, stating, "that's what you do in a democracy, not revenge." He has also asserted that it is a crime in plain sight to slander him, and he has the obligation as a public official to denounce the crime.

The investigation into Uribe's assassination is ongoing, with several people, including the alleged mastermind, Elder José Arteaga Hernández, alias 'El Costeño', having been arrested. As the nation mourns the loss of a respected senator, the case continues to shed light on the complex and evolving relations between Colombia and the United States.
