Top Ten Most Stressful Intersections in the World: United States Takes the Lead

In a study conducted by Scrap Car Comparison, the world's most stressful intersections have been ranked based on driver stress and complexity. The results reveal a surprising dominance of the United States, with three intersections making it to the top ten list.

The most stressful intersection globally is Meskel Square in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Known for its chaotic and disorderly traffic flow, this intersection consistently tops the list as the most anxiety-inducing for drivers.

Ranked second is the Judge Harry Pregerson Interchange in Los Angeles, California. This interchange, one of the US intersections in the top list, boasts eight stacked traffic levels towering over 130 feet high, with a maze-like design offering full directional access. Its confusing exits and aggressive traffic contribute to its high stress level.

In fourth place, we find the Newark Airport Interchange in New Jersey. This intersection, located in the United States, is stressful due to its complex ramps, lane merges, and the pressure of navigating aggressive local traffic, especially when trying to catch flights on time.

Interestingly, the I-5/I-8 Interchange in San Diego, California, ties with two other European intersections for ninth place in the most stressful intersections list. This intersection, like the Judge Harry Pregerson Interchange, also has high traffic volume and several complex lane changes.

The specific states with US intersections in the top list are not specified, but it's worth noting that the US has the most stressful intersections in the world, according to this study.

Other notable US intersections, while not making it to the top ten, are recognised for their complexity and chaos. For example, a heavily stacked interchange in Phoenix, Arizona, is recognised for its layered road design.

These rankings underscore that driver stress at intersections is often caused by complexity, multiple levels or ramps, aggressive traffic, and confusing layouts. While this list only covers a few examples, it highlights some of the most cited and studied stressful junctions worldwide.
