American Tennis Star Apologizes for Criticizing Chinese Food
U.S. resident Taylor Townsend launches a tirade on social media regarding Chinese cuisine, subsequently expresses remorse for her remarks
Taylor Townsend, the world No. 1 in women's doubles, is currently competing in the Billie Jean King Cup in Shenzhen, China. However, her performance on the court has taken a backseat after a social media rant about the quality of the food at a hotel in Shenzhen.
The controversy began on Tuesday when Townsend, aged 29, posted a critical commentary about the food on Instagram. The dishes she criticized included bullfrogs, gizzards, lung, and chicken skin, which she rated a 'solid two out of 10'. Townsend even threatened to 'talk to HR' about the food quality.
Townsend's apology came after the social media rant, where she sincerely expressed her regret for her comments. The apology was viewed on Weibo, a Chinese social media platform, more than 20 million times.
However, Townsend's apology did not deter criticism from all quarters. Latvia's Jelena Ostapenko, a fellow tennis player, accused Townsend of having 'no class' and 'no education'.
The incident has sparked a debate on social media, with some users defending Townsend's right to express her opinion, while others criticized her for being insensitive to Chinese culture. A Chinese user on Weibo quoted a Chinese idiom, 'Wild boars cannot eat fine grain,' in response to Townsend's apology.
Despite the controversy, Townsend's focus remains on her tennis game. She has issued another apology on Instagram on Wednesday, expressing her desire to move past the incident and focus on her performance in the Billie Jean King Cup.
It is worth noting that the search results do not provide information about another tennis player linked to Townsend in relation to her comments about Chinese food. Townsend's apology serves as a reminder for athletes to be mindful of their words and actions, especially when they are representing their country on an international stage.
