The Gaza Strip continues to grapple with a severe humanitarian crisis, approaching famine conditions, as nearly 1,400 Palestinians have been killed while seeking food since late May 2025. Despite Israeli-announced military pauses intended to improve humanitarian access, aid delivery continues to face significant obstacles.

U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, will visit the Gaza Strip tomorrow. Witkoff aims to learn more about the situation on the ground and work on a plan for further aid deliveries. He has already met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The World Health Organization has warned of a deadly hunger crisis in the Gaza Strip. U.S. President Donald Trump has called for more food supplies for the needy civilian population in Gaza, and the U.S. government supports the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation. However, aid and human rights organizations accuse Israel of deliberately starving the population in Gaza, considering this a war crime.

Larger aid deliveries were brought into the Gaza Strip by truck for the first time in months. Yet, the GHF distribution centers in the Gaza Strip are internationally criticized due to long journeys required for aid seekers, which force large crowds to move through active combat zones.

Witkoff may also visit the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation to get an impression of the controversial distribution of aid goods. Meanwhile, negotiations for a ceasefire in the Gaza conflict have recently stalled. The Israeli government rejects accusations of soldiers securing the area shooting into the crowd of aid seekers, a claim denied by the army.

The U.S. government has recalled its negotiating team from Qatar's capital, Doha. The public status of ceasefire negotiations remains unclear, with ongoing hostilities and humanitarian operations continuing in parallel. The roles of the U.S., Israel, and Hamas in formal negotiations are not elaborated in current public UN or humanitarian agency sources.

Approximately two million Palestinians live in the sealed coastal region of Gaza. The humanitarian crisis is further compounded by the fact that around 900 people have died in the pursuit of food, according to UN figures. Witkoff attributes the stalled negotiations to a lack of willingness on the part of Hamas to achieve a ceasefire.

The visit of Witkoff and Huckabee to the Gaza Strip comes at a critical time, as the situation continues to deteriorate. The international community is urged to take immediate action to alleviate the crisis and ensure the safe and unrestricted flow of aid to the civilian population in the Gaza Strip.
