U.S. Representative Expresses Gratitude to Qatar for Financing Gas Supply to Syria via Turkey from Azerbaijan

The much-anticipated energy initiative, fully funded by Qatar, is set to commence operations from Friday. This initiative aims to deliver 800 megawatts (MW) of electricity to Syria, marking a profound step toward relief and stability in the region.

The source of the natural gas for this initiative is Azerbaijan, and it will be transported through Kilis in Turkey, ultimately reaching Aleppo in northern Syria. This pipeline has the capacity to export up to 2 billion cubic meters (BCM) of natural gas annually, powering approximately 5 million households and alleviating long-standing energy shortages caused by years of conflict and infrastructure damage.

The damaged pipelines in Aleppo have been repaired to enable these flows, and the project is seen as a milestone in regional cooperation, involving Azerbaijan, Turkey, Syria’s new administration, and Qatar. This new trilateral energy cooperation is part of broader efforts to rebuild Syria's energy infrastructure and support its recovery from civil war.

The natural gas supply will significantly contribute to regional stability by restoring gas deliveries that support electricity generation and economic recovery. Turkey's active role in rebuilding Syria's energy infrastructure leverages its geographic proximity and technical expertise, contributing further to the normalization and reconstruction process.

By improving Syria’s electricity generation capacity, the natural gas supply helps stabilize public services, supports industries, and boosts the local economy, thereby fostering social and economic stability in the region. This energy cooperation not only addresses Syria’s acute energy crisis but also strengthens diplomatic and economic ties, promoting regional stability.

The U.S. Ambassador to Turkey and special envoy for Syria, Tom Barrack, thanked Qatar for its significant contribution to this initiative. The exact location where the initiative will start operating has not been specified. However, it is clear that this energy initiative will play a crucial role in bringing relief, stability, and prosperity to Syria and the wider region.
