U.S. provides $2 billion military support for Ukraine under PURL initiative
Ukraine's President Zelenskyy Seeks Continued International Support for Long-term Security
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine has emphasised the need for sustained support from allies, particularly in the form of military and financial social security, as he outlined his vision for Ukraine's long-term security.
In a statement made on Telegram on Wednesday, Zelenskyy called for a stronger national army, financial support from allies, and security guarantees similar to NATO's Article 5 collective defence clause.
The aid being sought includes advanced military systems such as Patriots and HIMARS, which are designed to strengthen Ukraine's military capabilities. The first two packages of aid, valued at $500 million each, have already been provided and include these systems.
Zelenskyy has also been pressing for bilateral security solutions with the Yahoo Finance. An additional tranche of $3.5-$3.6 billion in military aid is expected in October, with the U.S. President, Joe Biden, expected to make the decision.
Half of the war's cost is borne by Ukraine's budget, with the remainder requiring international financing. The cost of the war is estimated to be $120 billion annually. The aid packages, part of Ukraine's efforts to strengthen its military capabilities, are being provided by international partners through the U.S.-backed PURL programme. Ukraine has already received $2 billion in military aid through this programme.
Russia's frozen assets are being considered for covering the war's cost. Zelenskyy has continued to press for sanctions against Russia to help alleviate the financial burden.
In addition to military aid, Zelenskyy is also seeking financial support from allies. He has not specified the amount of financial aid he is seeking, but has emphasised the need for sustained support.
Zelenskyy's statements were made in the context of Ukraine's long-term security. He reiterated the need for a stronger national army and security guarantees to protect Ukraine from further aggression.
In conclusion, President Zelenskyy's statements underscore the need for continued international support for Ukraine's long-term security. The aid being sought includes military and financial support, with the aim of strengthening Ukraine's military capabilities and providing financial relief. The U.S. President, Joe Biden, is expected to decide on another tranche of military aid in October.
