U.S. President Trump to Revive Abandoned Afghan Base, Citing Concerns over China's Nuclear Arsenal

In a recent press conference in the United Kingdom, former US President Donald Trump expressed his desire to reclaim the abandoned Bagram Airbase in Afghanistan. The airbase, located near the western border of China, has strategic importance for Trump due to its proximity to China and Chinese nuclear weapons.

Trump stated that the US needs to reopen the Bagram Airbase to counter China's influence and secure American interests in the region close to Chinese territory. The location of Bagram might enable reconnaissance and surveillance flights, as well as other military options.

However, it is unclear whether the unspecified sites that Trump is referring to are 'an hour away' from Bagram Airbase. China has several nuclear sites in the west of the country, including Lop Nur, Hami, Yumen, and Qinghai.

Trump's interest in Bagram is more about strategic interests against China than against Afghanistan. He has criticized former US President Joe Biden for abandoning the airbase during the US withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021, arguing that the abandonment allowed the Taliban to take control of the base's facilities and US equipment.

The Pentagon estimates that China will have around 600 operational nuclear warheads by mid-2024, potentially increasing to 1000 by 2030. China is expanding and modernizing its strategic arsenal, according to the Pentagon's 2021 report on the Chinese military.

Trump believes that the return of Bagram is a priority for his administration due to the abandoned military equipment and weapons worth billions of dollars. The Bagram Airbase is currently under the control of the Afghan government.

Despite Trump's remarks, the White House has not yet responded to requests for details on his comments about reopening the Bagram Airbase. The future of the airbase remains uncertain, but Trump's statements underscore the strategic importance of the region in US-China relations.
