U.S. Politics: Charlie Kirk expresses worry towards rising political violence in America, specifically referencing concerns held by Leo XIV.
On Saturday, September 13, Pope Francis met with the newly appointed U.S. ambassador to the Vatican, Brian Francis Burch. The audience was a significant one, as it marked the beginning of Burch's term as the U.S. ambassador.
During the meeting, the assassination of American political activist and media personality, Charlie Kirk, was a topic of discussion. Kirk, who co-founded the organization "Turning Point USA", was tragically shot dead at the age of 31 on September 10.
The shooting occurred during a public event at Utah Valley University's campus.
Pope Francis expressed his deep condolences to the Kirk family during the meeting with Burch. He also prayed for Charlie Kirk, his wife Erika Kirk (formerly Erika Frantzve), and their two children. Erika Kirk will be buried on September 21, 2023, in Glendale, Arizona. She married Charlie Kirk in 2021.
In the conversation, Pope Francis emphasised the need to refrain from any rhetoric and manipulation leading to polarisation rather than dialogue. He also conveyed his concern about political violence.
The meeting between Pope Francis and Burch was not the only occasion where the Pope expressed his condolences for Charlie Kirk. During a separate conversation on Tuesday, the topic of Kirk's assassination was again discussed, and the Pope reiterated his condolences and prayers for the Kirk family.
