Arrest Made in Deadly Shooting of Minnesota Politicians: 57-Year-Old Suspect Apprehended

U.S. politician's alleged assassin taken into custody

Got your attention? The culprit behind the recent shootings of two Democratic politicians in Minnesota has been nabbed. Sheriff Bob Fletcher of Ramsey County made the big announcement via Facebook, complete with a snap of the creepy crook.

According to news outlets, the suspect, Vance Luther Boelter, a 57-year-old, was apprehended on Sunday evening in a rural area southwest of Minneapolis. Not exactly the welcome wagon, huh?

Boelter, armed to the teeth, is accused of murdering legislator Melissa Hortman, a member of the Minnesota House of Representatives, and her husband. In a separate attack, US Senator John Hoffman and his wife were injured.

Reports suggest Boelter disguised himself as a policeman before launching his tragic terror spree. He first opened fire on John Hoffman and his wife, wounding both. About an hour and a half later, the deadly showdown at Hortman's house went down, claiming both victims.

Cops engaged Boelter in a shootout near Hortman's house, but he managed to flee. However, investigators were able to seize his vehicle and later track him down[1][2]. Preliminary investigations indicate that his opposition to abortion may have sparked his violent rampage. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz described it as an "act of targeted political violence," while US President Donald Trump also condemned the attacks.

The polarized political climate in the US has been on a steady boil as of late. In 2024, during the presidential campaign, a man with a firearm attempted to gun down then-Republican presidential candidate Trump[3]. In April 2025, an arson attack was carried out on the residence of the Democratic Governor of Pennsylvania, Josh Shapiro[4].

In 2022, the husband of then-Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi was attacked with a hammer in their home, leaving him severely injured[5].
