"Swamp House Arrests" Florida's Got a Wild Immigration Lockup
U.S. Plans to Establish a Detention Center for Deportees in the Marshland
Ready for a twist? Florida's got a plan to deal with those pesky illegal immigrants who've done time. They're building detention centers smack dab in the Everglades, where you can find more gators than people usually!
The Homeland Security Secretary, Kristi Noem, gave the green light to this wild idea. She announced that most of the cash for this project will come from the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) housing and services program. Florida's Attorney General, James Uthmeier, called it "Alligator Alcatraz." Talk about a tough sell!
If you ever end up locked up here, forget about trying to make a run for it. You'll find yourself up against some serious reptile sentinels in the swamps and rivers surrounding the area. Everglades National Park is famous for its reptile population, so you can bet there's plenty of slippery customers waiting to give you a bite.
Uthmeier reckons they can house 5,000 inmates in total, with "Alligator Alcatraz" itself offering space for 1,000. That's one heck of a crowd, and man, are they going to be bored!
When Uthmeier talked about the detention center, he said, "There's no way out." Guess people have to learn to be more resourceful in this wild part of Florida! Construction is expected to wrap up in just one or two months, and the annual cost to run this swamp jail is estimated to be around 400 million euros.
International Take Trump's "Escape-Proof" Detention Island
This isn't Trump's first rodeo. He's been all about cracking down on migrants since he became president. He's made foreign students pack their bags, and ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) now routinely checks people on the street and takes them if they're not U.S. citizens. Sometimes they even fly them off, masked officers raid places, and courts have ruled that many of these arrests and deportations are actually illegal.
Noem told CBS News that under Trump's leadership, they're working on creative ways to round up illegal migrants with criminal records and get rid of them. Florida's more than happy to help.
Trump's a fan of "Alligator Alcatraz." He said it's a key part of solving the problem of illegal immigration in the country. Florida's all in too, promising to stand by the government to keep their state safe, strong, and free.
So, there you have it. Get caught breaking immigration laws in Florida, you might just find yourself in a swampy, gator-filled detention center. Talk about a tough staycation!
