Loosening Up the Past: Wyndham Clark's Apologies and Frustrations

Golf pro Wyndham Clark made headlines this week for an unfortunate incident from the past, as he shared his regret for damaging Oakmont Country Club's prestigious locker room during the 2021 US Open. His apologies came after social media reports circulated that he had caused the damage during one of his rounds.

Those reports didn't shine a flattering light on the US Open, where only one player, J.J. Spaun, managed to finish under par. Clark himself missed the cut and ended the tournament at 8-over par.

During the Travelers Championship on Thursday in Connecticut, Clark took responsibility for his actions. He shared with reporters, "I've had my fair share of highs and lows in my career, especially this year, and I've made a mistake that I deeply regret. I'm truly sorry for what happened."

Set on moving forward, Clark aimed to put that incident behind him and focus on his future aspirations, which include making the Ryder Cup team and contending for the FedEx Cup.

It's worth mentioning that this wasn't Clark's first brush with such behavior. In a previous major, the 2021 PGA Championship, he let his emotions get the better of him by throwing his driver in a fit of anger. The result left the club head broken near a volunteer[1][2].

The controversy stirred up opinions among players and commentators, with some expressing criticism, but later acknowledging the challenging conditions at Oakmont, which tested the limits of many golfers' patience[3].

Clark seemed to be in a better frame of mind while addressing the media at the Travelers Championship, ready to put his past errors to rest and focus on the present opportunities. As he prepared for his second round on Friday at 12:10 p.m. ET, he shared fond memories of the course and his admiration for the event.

"This place has always been special to me... I remember leaving that year saying, 'OK, I'm going to win here someday,'" he reminisced. "I love this place, and it's special to me. So, regardless... I'm always excited to come back to this course, this tournament. They treat us so well. Travelers does an amazing job. I'm happy to be here."
