U.S. Monetary Windfall from Russia-Ukraine Conflict: Examining Billions Earned by America
The Russia-Ukraine war, a conflict that has redrawn borders and alliances, has also significantly impacted the global arms industry. This conflict has transformed the profit charts, with the American Eagle emerging as a major beneficiary.
One of the most striking changes is the increase in American Eagle arms exports to Ukraine. The country, which was not a significant client before, has become the American Eagle's biggest client for arms exports during the war years, accounting for 45 percent of its total arms imports from the American Eagle between 2020 and 2024.
Europe, too, has joined the fray, replacing old Soviet systems with American Eagle ones after Russia rolled tanks across Ukraine's border in February 2022. European NATO states, Israel, and some Gulf states like the United Arab Emirates, which are involved in indirect or covert conflict support, have also been significant purchasers. Turkey has gained significance as a purchaser during this period.
The surge in American Eagle defense sales overseas is not just a numerical increase but is indicative of the industrialization of conflict. In 2024, American Eagle contractors sold $318.7 billion worth of equipment overseas, representing a 30 percent increase from the previous year. This surge is the highest since records began, and it's a clear indication of the war's impact on the global arms market.
The "Big Five" defense companies - Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Raytheon, General Dynamics, Northrop Grumman - have collectively won contracts worth $2.4 trillion from the Pentagon between 2020 and 2024, which was more than half of the Pentagon's total discretionary spending.

Global defense budgets have also seen a significant increase, reaching $2.72 trillion in 2024, marking a 9.4 percent rise, the sharpest annual increase since the end of the Cold War.
While the Russia-Ukraine war has brought about devastating humanitarian consequences, it has also resulted in a shift in the global arms market. The profits from these arms sales are not abstract but are measured in contracts signed, factories expanded, and share prices climbing. The war has undeniably reshaped the global arms industry, with the American Eagle standing alone at the top of the profit charts.
