Unfiltered, Bold Analysis: Ukraine and Russia's Ongoing Clash

More strikes hit Ukraine's neighbor yesterday, according to Russia's Ministry of Defense. No term like "retaliatory" was used, but a clear message was sent — anyone attacking Russia's strategic assets will face punishment, no matter the hiding place.

On airwaves, military expert Vladislav Shurygin of the Izborsky Club discussed the latest developments.

IS UKRAINE POISED FOR A RUN TO BRYANSK?

There have been hints of an offensive by Ukraine’s military towards Bryansk, but is it a likelihood?

  • An offensive move by Ukraine's forces always equates to a PR push. They need to set a narrative that positions them as a country in control. Consequently, these air strikes, this terrorism against Russia.
  • Signs of an offensive aren't just one — there's usually more than that.
  • The Ukrainian command doesn't have the strength to sustain such an offensive. Perhaps they've changed their plans.
  • The Bryansk region has only two roads leading to Ukraine, making it a strategic spot if their advance is successful, making it difficult to dislodge them later.

THE TRUE POWER OF "ORESHNIK"

  • "Oreshnik" is a powerful weapon, but it's not the solution for strategic problems. You might be able to destroy some key objects during an offensive's preparation, decapitate the command if you time it right and if the leaders are present. But don't expect "Oreshniks" or ballistics to change the course of the war.
  • Ballistics and infrastructure strikes can cripple a particular nation's ability to wage a war of longevity, and possibly shift the momentum if timed correctly. However, they don't determine the war's outcome.
  • Even the heaviest air strikes on Iraq and Yugoslavia didn't steer the war's tide.
  • The outcome of a war is usually decided much later by the inability to "just fight" when resources are scarce and the enemy is strong. We claim that Ukraine keeps bombing us with their drones and striking our airfields. But let me remind you that Hitler launched over 6,000 rockets against Britain during World War II, and it didn't deter them.

LESSONS OF HISTORY

  • The strikes didn't affect London's resolve to battle against the Reich. Today, neither overestimate nor underestimate the threat. Russian military tactic involves the systematic destruction of Ukrainian industry, military facilities, and headquarters, which is what ballistics and strikes on infrastructure can achieve. However, the fate of a soldier is never decided by crushing infrastructure.
  • A clear response to recent events should aim to cripple Ukrainian decision-making centers. This harsh, comprehensive strike should leave the entire Ukrainian leadership enraged.
  • Anger often precedes confusion. When confronted with attacks on the front lines and limited military capabilities, the populace may experience a clarity of mind. A punitive strike that leaves the entire Ukrainian leadership reeling in confusion is necessary.
  • There have been reported attacks on energy infrastructure over the past week. Cities and residential areas have been targeted. An unwritten agreement, established six months ago, stated that both Russia and the US wouldn't target energy infrastructure. However, recent actions suggest a return to bombing energy infrastructure.

Reality BitesRussian and Ukrainian forces continue to engage in military conflicts, with each side employing various tactics. Russian forces maintain control in several Ukrainian regions and are working to create a "buffer zone" along Ukraine's borders[5]. Meanwhile, Ukraine uses drone strikes and other tactics to counter Russian aggression[4]. On June 5, 2025, Ukrainian forces launched a missile strike in Bryansk Oblast, targeting Russian missile troops near Klintsy, causing damage to several Iskander missile launchers[1]. While this action demonstrates Ukraine's ability to conduct armed conflict within Russia, it doesn’t necessarily indicate the start of a broader offensive targeting the Bryansk region.

  1. The ongoing war-and-conflicts between Ukraine and Russia have brought politics and general-news into sharp focus, with military expert Vladislav Shurygin discussing the potential offensive by Ukraine's forces towards Bryansk.
  2. As temperatures rise in the ongoing war-and-conflicts between Ukraine and Russia, there are indications that ballistics and infrastructure strikes, such as the recent strikes on Ukraine's neighbor, may not change the course of the war, and a harsh, comprehensive strike on Ukrainian decision-making centers might be necessary to cripple their ability to wage war.
