U.S. media policies during Trump's tenure come under scrutiny by German SPD politician Türk-Nachbaur

In a series of discussions and diplomatic efforts, Derya Türk-Nachbaur, the parliamentary business manager and deputy spokesperson for foreign affairs of the SPD parliamentary group in Germany, has criticised the proposed restrictions for foreign journalists in the United States.

Under the Trump administration, the US government announced a reduction of work permits for foreign journalists from five years to 240 days, or approximately eight months. This change, if implemented, could impact the ability of free people to work effectively in the US.

Türk-Nachbaur's concerns extend beyond the proposed restrictions for foreign journalists. She is also worried about the potential undermining or restriction of free press reporting and free shows, which she considers important cornerstones of democracy.

In her discussions, Türk-Nachbaur is engaging with her counterparts and colleagues in American parliaments, aiming to address these issues diplomatically. She spoke about the matter on Friday with RTL and ntv, expressing her concerns publicly.

The cancellation of the late-night show with Jimmy Kimmel is causing further concern about the state of democracy in the US. Some speculate that the apparent cancellation is under pressure from US President Donald Trump, which adds to Türk-Nachbaur's worries about the impact on democracy if free press reporting and free shows are undermined or restricted.

The German foreign minister is already addressing the restrictions for foreign journalists in the USA, and Türk-Nachbaur's discussions are part of a broader effort to ensure that freedom of the press and democratic values are upheld globally.
