The Qatari government has gifted a Boeing 747-8 to the United States, which is set to undergo extensive modifications before it can serve as the next Air Force One. The aircraft, built in 2012, boasts a travel range of 8,000 miles and modern engines for fuel-efficiency.

The retrofit for the Qatari jet is expected to be costly, with estimates suggesting a budget of around $1 billion. The Department of Defense has transferred nearly this amount to cover the renovation costs.

The modifications will equip the aircraft with the same security and communications capabilities present in the White House, ensuring it functions as a secure and fully equipped presidential transport. The aircraft will also be repainted in the traditional Air Force One color scheme of red, white, and blue.

The modifications encompass advanced security systems and military-grade avionics integration, enhanced, secure communications infrastructure, electrical system upgrades, executive interior design customized for presidential use, structural repairs, noise abatement improvements within the cabin, complete rewiring, and ongoing engineering finalizations.

While Boeing is still working on building the original Air Force One planes, the Qatari jet could be up and flying within a year. The first flight as Air Force One is expected sooner than anticipated.

The Qatari jet has been likened to a flying hotel due to its spacious interior and luxurious amenities. In May, the US government accepted the $400m Boeing aircraft as an unconditional gift from Qatar.

Air Force One has been serving the US government since the 1950s, with President Dwight Eisenhower flying on Columbine II. The Qatari Boeing 747 will join this storied history, providing a secure and modern means of transportation for future presidents.
