U.S. Inaction Pursued by Families of Deceased Americans in Israel: "What Else Is Needed?"
Press Conference Demands Accountability for US Citizens Killed by Israeli Forces
A press conference was held in front of the Capitol on Tuesday, led by Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.), as loved ones of individuals who have lost their lives in conflicts between Israel and Palestine called for justice and accountability.
Speaking at the event were family members of Sayfollah Musallet, Tawfiq Abdel Jabbar, Rachel Corrie, and Mohammed Ibrahim. Cindy Corrie, Rachel Corrie's father, spoke about the tragic death of his daughter, who was killed 20 years ago while trying to prevent Israel from destroying a Palestinian family's home.
During her speech, Cindy Corrie suggested that if there had been consequences for Rachel's killing and subsequent killings of U.S. citizens by Israeli soldiers and settlers, some families at the press conference may not have had to share their stories. However, she did not mention any specific lack of justice or human rights for any individual, unlike the statements made by Hafez Ajaq and others at the press conference.
Ozden Bennett, Eygi's sister, demanded an investigation into her unlawful killing by Israel. Mohammed Ibrahim, a 16-year-old Floridian, has been imprisoned by the Israeli military since February without trial.
Cindy Corrie also criticized the U.S. government for sending conflicting messages to Israel, citing diplomatic requests for investigations versus continuing military aid. She did not discuss the current imprisonment of Mohammed Ibrahim or include any demands for a specific investigation into Ayşenur Eygi's death or any other U.S. citizen's death at the hands of Israeli soldiers or settlers.
The Biden and Trump administrations have declined to act on calls to hold Israel accountable and conduct an independent investigation. The Department of Justice has remained silent to demands for an investigation into Ayşenur Eygi's death. The US Department of State has so far not responded to requests from families of Americans killed by Israeli soldiers and settlers for an independent, credible, and comprehensive investigation.
At least 10 Americans have been killed by Israeli violence in the West Bank and Gaza since 2022, but Cindy Corrie did not mention any new names of individuals killed by Israeli violence in the region during her speech.
The press conference was in response to the one-year anniversary of Ayşenur Eygi's death, an Israeli soldier fatally shooting a Seattle-based activist. The event served as a poignant reminder of the ongoing need for accountability and justice for all victims of violence in the region.
