After an astonishing two-month stint in U.S. detention, a German citizen and resident has finally been freed. The incident involving Fabian Schmidt, who's been living in the States since 2007, has left many question marks hanging over the circumstances that led to his extended incarceration.
Booted off at Boston airport on March 7 and shipped off to a Rhode Island detention center, Schmidt alleges that he was mistreated during questioning, even goes as far as to say they shouted at him. While in custody, he claims to have been subjected to humiliating tactics, including stripping down and being restrained to a bed. Unfortunately, these harrowing allegations couldn't be substantiated. The US Department of Homeland Security demurred when approached for comment.
The German Consulate General in Boston has been working tirelessly to support Schmidt since the case surfaced. According to the Foreign Office, they've taken over consular care.

Interestingly, Schmidt's mother reported that his interrogations repeatedly centered on a cannabis offense from almost a decade ago that was eventually dropped.
