US-Denmark Defense Deal Sparks Concerns Over Telecom Frequencies
U.S.-Denmark defense agreement potentially triggers telecom disruptions
A looming defense agreement between Denmark and the US might bring unexpected consequences for Danish telecom networks, causing headaches for users and companies. That's the take of IT Watch, following a draft regulation from Denmark's Digital Government Agency that has raised eyebrows.
The defense deal, set for a parliament vote on June 11th, gives Uncle Sam the green light to station troops in Denmark. Originally seen as relatively non-controversial, the deal has faced increased scrutiny due to political changes and tensions between the US and Denmark.
According to IT Watch, the draft regulation from the Digital Government Agency grants the United States sweeping powers to utilize Danish radio frequencies with no discernible limits, whether wartime or peacetime. Lars Dittmann, a network technology researcher at DTU, voiced his concern over this vague language, stating that it could provide the US military unfettered access to an area typically under tight control.
"In normal military exercises, a unit often claims specific frequencies for its telecommunications systems. Danes within a certain radius may find themselves unable to connect to mobile networks during these exercises," Dittmann explained.
The telecommunications sector isn't the only industry worried about the agreement's implications. An interest group for the Danish telecom industry, Teleindustrien, expressed concern as well. Jakob Willer, the group's director, stated, "The wording of the legislation is cause for concern, at least in principle. How much practical disruption it will cause, I can't say."

While the draft regulation grants the US military broad powers over Danish radio frequencies, it also requires coordination with Danish authorities when trying to avoid frequent disruptions due to urgent operational needs. The document states that American forces can collaborate with Danish officials on the use of frequencies, except in cases where "urgent operational circumstances" prevent coordination.
However, the exact ramifications of the deal on Danish telecom networks are still unclear, as more technical annexes or operational agreements between the Danish Defense Ministry and US military would need to be reviewed in order to better understand their potential impact.
