U.S. Demonstrations Against Trump Expanding Nationwide
Protests against President Donald Trump's immigration policy are intensifying across the nation, particularly in major cities like New York, Atlanta, Chicago, and, to a greater extent, Los Angeles. In response, Texas Governor Greg Abbott has called in the National Guard, as parts of LA were under curfew overnight due to five days of unrest, resulting in looting and nighttime violence.
In LA alone, 197 people were arrested on Tuesday, and Mayor Karen Bass insists the police can handle the protests, most of which are peaceful and limited to approximately five city blocks. However, hundreds of Marines arrived in LA Tuesday, at Trump’s order, adding to the 4,000 National Guard troops already deployed following his decision. This action is mired in legal controversy as California has already filed a lawsuit against the federal government.
California Governor Gavin Newsom, who is considered a strong Democratic presidential contender for 2028, saw the situation escalate as an "outrageous attack on peace" and accused Trump of stoking violence. He robustly condemned the deployment of federal troops in California, threatening a lawsuit against both the President and the Department of Defense.
Texas Governor Abbott, echoing a similar stance, announced the deployment of the National Guard, stating that they would be stationed to ensure peace and order, and warned that damaging people or property would result in arrest. Clashes between protesters and police in Austin have already occurred, with further protests anticipated in Texas this week.
Trump, speaking at Fort Bragg to justify his decision, referred to the protests as an "outright attack on peace, public order, and national sovereignty" and justified the presence of federal troops in LA. Despite the legal challenges, the federalization of the National Guard remains under the president's control, as an appeals court has temporarily suspended the lower court's order to relinquish control back to Governor Newsom.
