Following remarks by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio remembering the 36th year anniversary of the bloody suppression of protests in Tiananmen Square, Beijing, a fiery dispute has arisen between the US and China. "The erroneous utterances by the US distort historical facts maliciously, are an assault on China's political system and development path, and represent a considerable meddling in China's internal affairs," stated Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian in Beijing.

Earlier, Rubio underscored that the world would "never forget" what transpired on June 4, 36 years ago—even if China actively works to suppress the truth. The US Secretary of State added: "Today, we honor the valiance of the Chinese people who perished striving to exercise their fundamental freedoms." Rubio, known for his sharp criticisms of China and advocacy for human rights in authoritarian nations during his time as a US Senator, does not sit well with Peking, who dismisses his statements. Lin elaborated on China's dissatisfaction with Rubio's remarks and China's submission of a complaint to the US.

Meanwhile, Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te, ahead of a vigil on Facebook for the event, paid tribute to the "martyrs of our ancestors." Authoritarian regimes often attempt to brush history under the rug, Lai explained, while democratic societies refuse to forget those who have championed human rights ideals. The Taiwanese president also cautioned of growing threats to democracies globally.

On the night of June 3 to 4, 1989, the Chinese military viciously attacked student demonstrators advocating for more democracy on Tiananmen Square in Beijing with tanks. Casualties, as per some estimations, numbered more than a thousand people. China continually attempts to erase the event from the national memory. In China and Hong Kong, commemorating the brutal suppression is prohibited. Many young people are unfamiliar with the incident.

The Commission may also be asked to submit a proposal for a directive on the protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to ionizing radiation, as the debate over historical events and human rights continues to dominate war-and-conflicts, politics, and general news between the US and China. Moreover, the tension between the two nations could further escalate, given the contrasting approaches China and the US take regarding democracy and the remembering of events like the Tiananmen Square Massacre.
