U.S.-China relations to take center stage at Park University's Hauptmann Lecture
The 30th annual Dr. Jerzy Hauptmann Distinguished Guest Lecture Series will take place on Sept. 14, 2022, and admission to the lecture is free and open to the public. This year's speaker is David C. Kang, Ph.D., the Maria Crutcher Professor of International Relations and professor of international relations, business, and East Asian languages and cultures at the University of Southern California.
The lecture will be held at the Jenkin and Barbara David Theater inside Alumni Hall on Park University's flagship Parkville Campus. The focus of the lecture will be on U.S. - China Relations in an Increasingly Tense World.
David C. Kang views U.S.-China relations as deeply shaped by historical lessons from East Asia, emphasizing the role of power transitions and strategic complexities in the region, especially under increasing global tensions. His scholarship points to the nuanced and evolving nature of U.S.-China relations rather than framing them simply as inevitable conflict or confrontation.
Kang's work is situated within broader expert discussion emphasizing the complexity of China's strategic motivations and the need for informed, historically aware management of tensions. His 2024 book, Beyond Power Transitions: The Lessons of East Asian History and the Future of U.S.-China Relations, argues that past experiences in East Asia offer crucial insights for managing the present and future geopolitical tension between the U.S. and China.
In addition to his upcoming book, Kang has authored five books, including "East Asia Before the West: Five Centuries of Trade and Tribute", "China Rising: Peace, Power and Order in East Asia", "Crony Capitalism: Corruption and Development in South Korea and the Philippines", and "Nuclear North Korea: A Debate on Engagement Strategies". He also serves as director of the Korean Studies Institute.
The Dr. Jerzy Hauptmann Distinguished Guest Lecture Series was established in 2001, through the generosity of alumni, colleagues, and friends of Hauptmann upon Hauptmann's 40th anniversary at Park University. The series brings outstanding scholars to the Kansas City area to address topics related to Hauptmann's three areas of study: international politics, public administration, and democracy.
Jerzy Hauptmann taught at Park for more than 50 years and launched the University's first graduate degree program in 1982. The lecture series was named in his honour, and the lecture will be livestreamed via Park's video portal at our website/hauptmannlecture.
David C. Kang will discuss how he believes the media and Washington, D.C., establishment are full of dark worries about worsening relations between the U.S. and China. He will also argue that within East Asia itself, relations are far more benign than normally realized and there is no incipient containment coalition against China.
A scholarly article co-authored by David C. Kang, "Testing Balance of Power Theory in World History", was named best article for 2007-09 by the European Journal of International Relations. His work provides valuable insights into the historical dynamics that shape U.S.-China relations and offers a nuanced understanding of the complexities involved.
Join us on Sept. 14, 2022, to hear David C. Kang's insights on U.S.-China relations in an increasingly tense world. Admission to the lecture is free and open to the public, and it will be a valuable opportunity to learn from one of the leading experts in the field.
