Morning, reader!

The Big Apple's iconic beacon, the Statue of Liberty, has weathered the U.S. storm for centuries—embodying freedom and welcoming the downtrodden. But, some argue, times have changed under President Trump, and the statue no longer embodies the values it symbolizes.

While many see this argument as mere debate fodder, French politician Raphaël Glucksmann drummed up a stir by demanding the return of the statue—a symbolic gesture meant to critique U.S. policies, not a literal request. Glucksmann, surveying the political landscape, suggested that the statue should come back to France as it no longer seemed fitting in the U.S.[1][2]

Predictably, the U.S. government had a resounding "no" to the proposal. Spokesperson Karoline Leavitt lashed out, citing the U.S.'s role in liberating France during World War II as grounds to feel grateful, not indignant.[1][2] Leavitt didn't mince words, dubbing Glucksmann a "low-ranking French politician."[2]

While the SS United States may be up for sale[3], it's safe to say that the Statue of Liberty won't be joining it any time soon.

On a different note, the state of the black-red budget package is on the Bundestag's agenda today.[1] <

Unions are stepping up demands for better wages in the public sector, with over 2.5 million employees at the negotiating table.[1] The current stalemate in wage negotiations may have you reaching for the calculator to crunch the numbers.

In more Israeli-Palestinian conflicts, the ceasefire that had lasted several weeks has ended with renewed attacks on the Gaza Strip.[1] The death toll is already rising, with reports of over 50 Palestinians killed.[4]

At the Beckenbauer Cup in Munich, football legends went head to head for a worthy cause, offering soccer enthusiasts a taste of days gone by.[1]

  1. Despite French politician Raphaël Glucksmann's proposal to return the Statue of Liberty to France, it appears the statue will not be relocating any time soon.
  2. In a stark contrast, the Commission has also been asked to submit a proposal for a directive on the protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to ionizing radiation, a concern perhaps more relevant to Glucksmann's stature as a politician than to the Statue of Liberty.
  3. As for the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflicts, it seems that the ceasefire, much like Glucksmann's demand, has ceased to exist, resulting in an escalation of attacks and casualties.
