U.S. Anticipates Land Dispute Resolutions from Russia and Ukraine in Proposed Peace Agreement
Straight up, the ol' U.S. Vice Prez JD Vance announced on April 23rd that Washington has thrown a big 'ol proposition for a peace treaty between Mother Russia and Ukraine on the table. Vance still thinks these two warring factions need to make up their minds—either agree to this deal or watch the U.S. walk away.
Vance visited India to speak with the press and said the time has come for the Ukrainian and Russian dudes to take action—either say yes, or see the U.S. depart from the bargaining table. He admitted that the U.S. has put in a heck of a lot of effort into diplomacy and on-ground operations, claiming they've truly tried to understand both Ukrainian and Russian viewpoints. Vance claimed they've come up with a pretty darn fair compromise.
He suggested that if this ain't the final step, it's surely one of the final ones. Vance urged all sides to agree to a ceasefire, freeze lines somewhere close to where they're at now, and work towards a long-term diplomatic solution.
Vance acknowledged that any agreement will demand both parties to vacate control of certain territories. Although future borders might not line up perfectly with the current front lines, the urgency to end the fighting and establish a ceasefire cannot be overlooked.
U.K.'s Prime Minister's Office spokesperson told AFP: "We back U.S.-led efforts to bring a lasting end to the war. That's what everyone wants. ultimately, the decision lies with Ukraine."
Reports suggest that the U.S. may recognize Russia's official control over Crimea and its de facto power over occupied regions in Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson, as part of this proposal. Moscow claims nearly 20% of Ukraine's territory, including Crimea and parts of the Donbas region taken in 2014, and additional territories encroached upon after the full-scale war in 2022.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has dismissed the idea of recognizing Russian control over Crimea. Trump declared his country would abandon the ceasefire initiative in the following days unless progress is made.
French President Emmanuel Macron's office told AFP that "respect for Ukraine's territorial integrity and its European aspirations are strong European demands." British, French, and German officials were meeting with American and Ukrainian ambassadors in London for ceasefire negotiations, aiming to develop a joint approach that the U.S. could present to Russia.
Ukraine met with European officials and U.S. Special Envoy General Keith Kellogg in London on April 23rd to carry on discussions regarding a potential peace process. Ukraine stated their desire to bring an end to the war more than anyone else in the world, as they are dedicated to working together to achieve this goal.
The London gathering, initially planned as a high-level ministerial summit involving the U.S., U.K., Germany, France, and Ukraine, was notably scaled down after U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff declined to attend.
Trump declared on April 23rd, via Truth Social, that the U.S. is not pressuring Ukraine to recognize Crimea as Russian territory, despite widespread rumors regarding a proposed American peace deal recognizing Russia's annexation. Trump stated that nobody was asking President Zelensky to recognize Crimea as Russian territory.
Crimea was seized by Russians in 2014, and, while Ukraine has repeatedly rejected requests to recognize the region as Russian, conflict and controversy continue to persist. Trump's statements have once again ignited hostilities between Ukrainians and Russians. Many have criticized Trump for his supportive stance on Russia and his inflammatory remarks towards Ukraine.
In another development, Ukraine conducted a long-range strike on a Russian facility producing combat drones, more than 1,000 kilometers (621 miles) from Ukraine's border. Ukrainian officials claimed they had notified other nations in advance, and the targeted facility was reported to manufacture hundreds of drones per day, which have been continuously used to attack Ukrainian cities and critical infrastructure.
Russian forces launched a major missile and drone attack on Kyiv early Thursday, killing at least nine people in the city and injuring more than 60, according to Ukrainian authorities. This marked the deadliest strike on Kyiv since last summer. The attack highlighted the ongoing conflict and the urgent need for a peace agreement to be reached.
