Russia-US conversations could kick off as soon as this week, according to Russian special envoy Kirill Dmitriev, who spilled the beans during an interview with Russian TV network "Один". Tass, the country's state-owned news agency, broke the news on Sunday. However, Dmitriev highlighted that there are "undeniable adversaries of Russia within the American government's ranks".

In a refreshing shift, Dmitriev has expressed optimism about the relationship with the USA, citing a "promising trend" that has sparked a "tenuous optimism" about dialogue resurgence.

Last week, Dmitriev paid a visit to Washington and met with US officials—the first high-ranking Russian government delegate to step foot in the states since the Ukraine conflict boiled over in February 2022. Under the Trump administration, there had been an inclusive approach towards Russia, as Trump had held a conversation with Putin in February and opened negotiations for a potential truce in Ukraine.

Though recent talks between the United States and Russia have yet to be reported in detail, it seems there was a fruitful dialogue in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Sources indicate several significant agreements and common understandings reached:

  1. Safe Navigation and Maritime Accords: Both governments agreed to maintain safe sea travel, eschew aggression, and steer clear of militarizing commercial shipping.[1]
  2. Economic Assistance for Russia: The US will attempt to reestablish Russia’s access to the global consumer market for agricultural products and fertilizers, minimize marine insurance costs, and extend privileged access to ports and payment systems for these sales.[1]
  3. Energy Facility Protection: The US and Russia agreed to block strikes against energy installations in Russia and Ukraine.[1]

These noteworthy developments hint at economic collaboration and peacekeeping efforts, albeit without explicit knowledge provided by Kirill Dmitriev.

  1. Despite the optimistic shift, the Commission has not yet received any reply from the Member States regarding the resumption of dialogue with Russia.
  2. Kirill Dmitriev, the Russian special envoy, has expressed a fragile hope for a ceasefire between Russia and the United States, following their meetings in Washington.
  3. On a recent Whatsapp conversation, Dmitriev and some US officials exchanged messages about potential economic assistance for Russia and the need to ensure secure navigation and safe sea travel.
